Through our partnership with the University of Nebraska, we are able to offer students the opportunity to earn an American high school diploma while studying in Korea. Students enroll with a full high school course load and receive direct instruction, individual tutoring, and support from our outstanding teachers. Students work at their own pace and can complete courses in as little as five weeks.
Earning an American high school diploma at Redwood provides many important advantages for students seeking to study abroad:
- Competitiveness
Gaining acceptance to universities abroad can be very competitive, some admitting only 5-6% of applicants. Therefore, it is necessary for students, especially international students, to separate themselves from the typical applicant. With a diploma from the University of Nebraska High School, students are able to do just that, demonstrating their passion and commitment to education in English while participating in a well-known and highly respected high school program.
- Preparation for American Style Education
Recent studies show that many Korean students are not prepared for studying abroad with nearly 45% of Korean students enrolled in high-ranking universities dropping out before graduation. This statistic is much higher than the dropout rate for students from the United States (34%), China (25%), and India (21.5%). Hank Pellissier, a respected educational author, states, “A principal reason for the lack of success is that the rote learning in Korean schools does not prepare students for the creative, active, and self-motivated form of learning U.S. universities require.” Dropping out of university has several damaging effects including reduced self-confidence and financial loss, typically greater than $50,000 per year.
By the time they complete their diploma requirements, students at Redwood have developed the skills and understanding necessary to succeed in the Western style classroom. Therefore, when our students attend their first classes in university, they are a step ahead of their peers, ready to take on the challenges given them by their instructors.
- English Language and Culture Preparation
Another reason that international students often drop out of university is inadequate English preparation, both academically and socially. Students at Redwood study all subjects in English with native speaking teachers. This helps students develop the necessary vocabulary for difficult language subjects like English literature, biology, history, and calculus. Additionally, mentoring and tutoring relationships with foreign teachers help students build fluency with the social English needed each day as a student abroad.
Overall, the Redwood high school experience helps students prepare for life abroad, academically and socially, allowing them to focus on what is important; academic success and building memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.
